As the maid of honor, you have been given the chance to make a good wedding become an amazing wedding. The duties of the maid of honor are much more than what most women realize. It’s not just all about being the best friend of the bride nor writing maid of honor speeches. It’s about being the one person that is in charge of making the wedding become an amazing wedding. It is a lot of work and requires a lot of time. Don’t sound frightened, however, you will see that being a maid of honor is a great experience!
The first thing that you must keep in mind is that the bride is putting a lot of trust in you as her maid of honor. She chose you out of all women to be responsible of the arrangements for the wedding. You will need to set aside a lot of time in order to make sure that everything is going as planned. This can be a major burden for some, especially if you are holding down a full-time job or are a full-time student.
As the maid of honor, your job is to not sit there and do everything the bride says. No – your job is more like an adviser to the bride to be. The bride has enough to worry about. So, you must take all suggestions that the bride gives you and make your own final determination. Of course, discuss each decision you want to make with the bride because she will have the final say. But remember, you’re not the bridesmaid so you can just stand around. Your job is to take the bride’s suggestions and make them better.
You will be going around with the bride to look at churches, reception centers, dresses, flower arrangements, decorations, food and more. You must always have a say in everything. Don’t sit there and agree with the bride. She wants you to give her your honest opinion. So make sure you do that! And don’t forget to work on writing a great wedding toast when you get the time.
Remember, eventually the bride will get to a point where she is stressed out and nervous. You are the one that must be there for her when she begins to break. This happens for almost every bride and it is at this point where the maid of honor takes control of all duties. You are now in charge of the wedding operations where you can make this wedding a great one! Just make sure you pass along everything you’re doing to the bride. She’ll thank you for it!
